How this works
The Chinese zodiac year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Lunar New Year, which lands somewhere between 21 January and 20 February depending on the year. Most calculators quietly ignore this and hand January birthdays the wrong animal.
Why January birthdays get this wrong so often
Because the Chinese year begins at Lunar New Year, anyone born in January or the first three weeks of February may belong to the previous animal. A calculator that only looks at the calendar year will hand those birthdays the wrong sign roughly one year in twelve.
The two elements every animal carries
- A fixed element that never changes - the Rat is always Water, the Ox always Earth.
- A year element from a separate ten-year cycle, which is why a 1996 Rat and a 2020 Rat are described differently.
Together those two cycles produce the 60-year sequence described on the Chinese zodiac hub.
