TL;DR
- A planet represents a function, a sign describes its style, and a house locates the area of life.
- Read in that order before adding aspects.
- Use the planet meanings in astrology as the verbs of the chart, then connect each one to its sign and house.
The sentence method
Birth charts become confusing when every symbol is treated as an adjective. A clearer method gives each layer a grammatical job. The planet is the verb or function. The sign is the manner. The house is the setting. Mars in Virgo in the Sixth House can then be read as action and assertion, expressed through analysis and refinement, focused on routines, service or maintenance.
This does not turn symbolism into fact. It creates a consistent interpretive method. Begin with how to read a birth chart if the wheel itself is unfamiliar.
Weight the layers in order
A beginner reading sequence| Layer | Read first? | Visual guide |
|---|---|---|
| Planet function | First | |
| Sign style | Second | |
| House area | Third | |
| Aspects and synthesis | After the basics |
| Chart layer | Core question | Example word |
|---|---|---|
| Planet | What function is acting? | Mercury: communicate |
| Sign | How does it act? | Capricorn: deliberately |
| House | Where does it act? | Third House: learning and exchange |
Keep astronomy and symbolism separate
The Sun, Moon and planets are physical bodies with measurable positions and motions. Astrology assigns symbolic meanings to those positions. NASA is an authority for the physical Solar System, while an astrology guide describes a tradition of interpretation. One source cannot validate the claims of the other, so a responsible article labels the boundary.
Placement translation form
Where aspects fit
After the placement sentence is clear, aspects in a birth chart describe angular relationships between planets. They may suggest ease, tension or emphasis in the traditional model. Do not let an aspect erase the basic function of either planet. It modifies the conversation between them.
A worked translation
Take Mercury in Capricorn in the Third House. Mercury supplies the function of learning and exchange. Capricorn adds a deliberate, structured style. The Third House places attention on everyday communication, local movement and skill building. A proportionate synthesis might ask whether the person prefers organised notes, planned conversations or mastery through repetition. It should not claim that every message will be formal or that one placement determines intelligence.

NASA's Solar System exploration pages describe the physical planets, dwarf planets and smaller bodies. Astrodienst's introduction to the chart drawing shows how planets, signs, houses, aspects and axes appear in a chart. Continue with why birth time changes the houses.
Turn the idea into evidence
Summarise
Write the central idea in one sentence without astrological jargon.
Test
Name one lived example that supports it and one that complicates it.
Choose
Take one small, reversible action and observe the result.
Keep astrology in perspective
Astrology can support reflection, but it cannot diagnose, guarantee outcomes, or replace qualified professional advice.
