The five major aspects
Each major aspect is a simple division of the 360-degree wheel. The orb is how far from exact the angle can be and still count - usually a few degrees, wider for the Sun and Moon.

Why square and opposition are not "bad"
Older texts call them hard aspects, and that language stuck. In modern practice they mark where something has to be worked out rather than where something goes wrong. A chart with no friction has nothing pushing it.
What an orb actually means
An aspect is rarely exact. If two planets are 88 degrees apart, most astrologers still read a square - it is within orb. The tighter the orb, the more strongly the aspect is usually weighted.
How to read an aspect
An aspect is always between two things, so name both before interpreting the angle.
1. Name both functions
Take each planet's own meaning first - Venus is relating, Saturn is limits. The aspect describes how those two meet.
2. Add the angle
The angle sets the tone: fused, flowing, or under tension.
3. Add the houses
The two houses involved say which areas of life the exchange plays out in.
4. Check the orb
A one-degree aspect is loud. A seven-degree aspect is background.

The major aspects are not random angles. Trines connect signs of the same element, and squares usually connect signs of the same modality. That is why trines feel familiar and squares feel like a standoff between two signs that both want to lead.
