In short

A planet is retrograde when it appears to move backwards through the zodiac as seen from Earth. Nothing actually reverses - it is a trick of perspective as Earth and the planet pass each other. Astrologers read the period as a time for review rather than launch.

Mercury retrograde: the one everybody asks about

Mercury turns retrograde three to four times a year, for about three weeks each time - more often than any other planet, which is why it dominates the conversation.

Mercury governs communication, travel and everyday exchange, so the period is traditionally read as a good window to revise, repair and finish rather than to sign, launch or announce. It is not a cause of every delay, and it does not affect everyone equally.

What the period is actually used for

Reviewing a decision you rushed, finishing something half-done, re-reading a contract before signing, or reconnecting with someone you lost touch with. The prefix re- is the usual shorthand.

How often each planet turns retrograde

The slower a planet moves, the longer it spends retrograde. Outer planets are retrograde for months every single year, which is why astrologers weight them far less than a Mercury station.

Why the Sun and Moon never retrograde

Retrograde motion happens when Earth overtakes a planet, or is overtaken by it, changing the viewing angle. The Sun is the point we orbit and the Moon orbits us, so neither can ever appear to reverse against the background stars. Any source describing a Sun or Moon retrograde is mistaken.

Reading a retrograde honestly

A retrograde is a symbolic frame, not a cause. It cannot break a phone, cancel a flight or end a relationship.

If you want to use it, note which house the retrograde planet is crossing in your own chart - that says far more about where a review might be useful than the retrograde alone does.

Retrogrades: common questions

What does retrograde mean in astrology?

It means a planet appears to move backwards through the zodiac as seen from Earth. Nothing physically reverses; it is an effect of the changing viewing angle as Earth and the planet pass each other.

How often is Mercury retrograde?

Three to four times a year, for about three weeks each time. Mercury turns retrograde more often than any other planet.

Can the Sun or Moon be retrograde?

No. Retrograde motion depends on Earth overtaking a planet or being overtaken by it. The Sun is the body Earth orbits and the Moon orbits Earth, so neither ever appears to reverse.

Is Mercury retrograde a bad time?

It is not read as bad. Because Mercury governs communication and exchange, the period is traditionally used for reviewing, repairing and finishing rather than launching or signing.

Keep the interpretation in proportion

A birth chart is a symbolic map. Use it for reflection and conversation, and use qualified professionals for health, law, finances, or mental wellbeing.
