In short

A cusp is the boundary where one zodiac sign ends and the next begins. The Sun does not change sign at midnight on a fixed date - the exact moment shifts by up to a day or so each year, so a birthday on the edge needs a calculated chart rather than a date table.

Why the dates move

The tropical zodiac is tied to the seasons, not the calendar. A year is not a whole number of days, which is why we have leap years - and the same drift means the Sun enters each sign at a slightly different clock time each year.

So a table saying Aries: March 21 to April 19 is a good average. In any given year the changeover can fall a day either side.

What that means for a border birthday

If you were born within roughly 24 hours of a boundary, a date table cannot answer the question. A calculated chart using your birth date, time and place can, and it will give you one sign rather than two.

You are not "both signs"

Popular writing often describes cusp births as a blend of two signs. In the astrology being described on this site, that is not how it works: at any moment the Sun is in exactly one sign. There is a boundary, and you are on one side of it.

What is true is that a chart usually contains several signs. Your Moon, rising sign and planets may well sit in the neighbouring sign, which is often what people are noticing when they feel like both.

The other kind of cusp

The word is also used for house cusps - the boundary where each of the twelve houses begins. Those depend on your birth time and place, and they are a separate question from the Sun's sign.

How to settle it

Three steps, in order.

1. Find your exact birth time

Even an approximate time narrows it considerably.

2. Calculate the chart

Any natal chart calculator will place the Sun by degree, not by date range.

3. Read the sign it gives you

Then open that sign guide. If the neighbouring sign still feels relevant, check whether other placements sit there.

TRY IT YOURSELF

Settle your own birthday

The calculator flags a boundary date instead of guessing, so you will know straight away whether yours is one.

Sign cusps: common questions

What does born on a cusp mean?

It means your birthday falls close to the boundary where one zodiac sign ends and the next begins. Because the Sun's changeover time shifts each year, a date table cannot reliably say which sign applies.

Can you be two star signs?

No. The Sun occupies exactly one sign at any moment, so a birth chart gives one Sun sign. People who feel like two signs often have a Moon or rising sign in the neighbouring one.

Why do zodiac dates change every year?

The tropical zodiac follows the seasons rather than the calendar, and a year is not a whole number of days. That drift moves each sign's start time by up to about a day from year to year.

Keep the interpretation in proportion

A birth chart is a symbolic map. Use it for reflection and conversation, and use qualified professionals for health, law, finances, or mental wellbeing.
